چکیده

The brain microstructure is the complex organizations of cellular structures and the extra-cellular space. Insights into this microstructure can be gained in vivo by means of diffusion-weighted imaging that is sensitive to the local patterns of diffusion of water molecules throughout the brain. Diffusion compartment imaging (DCI) provides a separate parameterization for the diffusion signal arising from each compartment of water molecules at each voxel. Their use in population studies and longitudinal monitoring of diseases hold promise for unraveling alterations of the brain microstructure in various disorders and conditions. Yet, to analyze multi-compartment models, high-level operations commonly used in scalar images need to be generalized. We present a framework that enables interpolation, averaging, filtering, spatial normalization and statistical analyses of multi-compartment data with a focus on multi-tensor representations. This framework is based on the generalization of linear combinations of voxel values through mixture simplification. We illustrate the impact of this framework in registration, atlas construction, tractography and population studies.

Accelerated motion-robust non-Cartesian multi-shot diffusion-weighted imaging with reconstruction in the image space

Purpose: To achieve high-resolution diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) with short duration acquisition and robustness to patient motion. In [1, 2], high resolution (HR) dense k-space sampling of a DW image was achieved with a series of anisotropically oversampled acquisitions (so-called "shots"), which amounts to sampling k-space in a non-Cartesian manner, and by reconstruction in the image space...

Dynamic Contrast Magnetic Resonance Imaging (DCE-MRI) and Diffusion Weighted MR Imaging (DWI) for Differentiation between Benign and Malignant Salivary Gland Tumors

Background: Salivary gland tumors form nearly 3% of head and neck tumors. Due to their large histological variety and vicinity to facial nerves, pre-operative diagnosis and differentiation of benign and malignant parotid tumors are a major challenge for radiologists. Objective: The majority of these tumors are benign; however, sometimes they tend to transform into a malignant form. Functional M...

Early Prediction of Delayed Ischemia and Functional Outcome in Acute Subarachnoid Hemorrhage: Role of Diffusion Tensor Imaging.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) parameters are markers of cerebral lesion in some diseases. In patients with acute subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH), we investigated whether DTI parameters measured at <72 hours might be associated with delayed cerebral ischemia (DCI) and with poor functional outcome at 3 months (modified Rankin Scale score ≥3). METHODS DTI was performed in a...

Arcuate fasciculus delineation by means of diffusion compartment imaging based tractography

Purpose: The arcuate fasciculus (AF) is a crucial language pathway in the human brain connecting Broca's area in the frontal lobe to Wernicke's area in the temporal lobe. Using tractography to analyze the AF, investigators have identified anomalies in a variety of diseases. Currently, white matter fiber tractography is most commonly implemented using the principal diffusion direction of the dif...

Differentiation of active tumor from edematous regions of glioblastoma multiform tumor in diffusion MR images using heterogeneity analysis method

Background: Due to intrinsic heterogeneity of cellular distribution and density within diffusion weighted images (DWI) of glioblastoma multiform (GBM) tumors, differentiation of active tumor and peri-tumoral edema regions within these tumors is challenging. The aim of this paper was to take advantage of the differences among heterogeneity of active tumor and edematous regions within the gliobla...
